Garb

Lothar shows off his Viking garb.

Garb is the term generally used in Markland to describe the medieval clothing that we make and wear to our events.  We encourage our members to use historically accurate patterns and fabrics when making garb.  The most common fabrics available during the medieval period were linen and wool.  Silk was available to only the rich in Europe, but was more readily available to Asian cultures.  Cotton did not reach Europe until very late in the medieval period and was only available to the rich so we do not encourage its use for garb.

A good source for historically accurate garb patterns for the period the Battle of Hastings can be found here.
