Club History
Maryland Medieval Mercenary Militia was founded in 1969, by five University of Maryland students who thought it would be fun to reenact the Battle of Hastings on campus. On October 14, 1969 fourteen people held the battle on Chapel Field with tin foil swords, trash can lid shields and spray-painted burlap armor. By 1972, club members began graduating. Not wanting stop their hobby just because they left school, these graduates decided to form Markland, a non-profit educational re-enactment organization. Hastings continued to be held every year as weapons and armor standards, as well as attendance improved. The tenth battle in 1979 had 140 participants. The club flourished in the eighties. Some members formed the Monarchy Party and ran for student government. In 1985, King Tom II was elected student government king. By 1993, Hastings had worn out its welcome on campus, and university officials encouraged us to move it to another location. After losing its location for the past several years in 2005, we were able to bring Hastings back to campus in 2006 where the 37th battle was held on Frat Row field (Diamondback Article).
